This majestic, rugged, canyon portion of the Kern River extends from Lake Isabella to the Upper Richbar picnic area. This portion of the Kern River has very steep canyon walls and extremely torrent water flows during spring run-off. The middle Kern River offers a variety of outdoor activities as well as some fine camping areas, however the only developed campgrounds are Hobo and Sandy Flat. Trout, as well as catfish, smallmouth, and largemouth bass are abundant in this portion of the river.
